UserWay Shopify App Alternative (2026)

Plans and rating from UserWay's own listing, plus a test you can run on your store tonight

UserWay is one of the most recognised accessibility widgets, and its Shopify app has a free tier, which makes it an easy first install. Whether it is enough for your store depends on what is broken in your theme, which you can check yourself in about ten minutes. Pricing and rating below come from the App Store listing on October 9, 2026.

UserWay's Shopify plans

The app, UserWay Website Accessibility by userway.org, shows 3.2★ from 11 reviews and lists English, French, Spanish and Portuguese. Paid plans add what the listing calls live monitoring of severe violations with recommended remediations.

A 10-minute test: is a widget enough for your theme?

Any overlay, UserWay's included, works on the page after your theme has rendered it. It does not by itself make a site WCAG-conformant; W3C's accessibility guidance says the same of automated repair tools in general. Run these checks on a product page with the mouse unplugged, first with the widget off, then with it on:

  1. Press Tab from the top. Can you see where focus is at every step?
  2. Reach the size or colour picker and choose an option with the keyboard alone.
  3. Add to cart. Does focus move into the cart drawer, and can Escape close it?
  4. Turn on VoiceOver (Mac) or NVDA (Windows). Do the cart, search and menu icons announce a name?
  5. Submit the newsletter or contact form empty. Is the error announced and tied to its field?

If a step fails with the widget off and still fails with it on, the fix belongs in your theme's Liquid, HTML or JavaScript. Those fixes are one-off work. Pageview-priced plans, by contrast, cost more as traffic grows: a store that passes 100,000 monthly views moves from the $49 tier to the $149 tier without anything on the page changing.

What to use instead

  • A storefront scan first. RatedWithAI ($29/mo, our product) runs axe-core across your pages and gives a fix list per element, so the failures from the test above become tickets for whoever maintains the theme.
  • Free spot checks. WAVE and Lighthouse cover one URL at a time, which is enough to confirm a single product template.
  • The theme vendor. If you run a paid theme, send the failing elements to its developer; a fix in the theme reaches every store using it.
  • A toolbar afterwards, if you want one. Some shoppers like text-size and contrast controls. Treat them as a convenience on top of a fixed theme, not as the fix.

Questions merchants ask

Is the UserWay Shopify app free?
Partly. The listing (checked October 9, 2026) offers a free Basic plan with a light widget of 20 features. The paid Shopify plans are priced by monthly page views: Starter $49/month up to 100,000, Small Biz $149/month up to 1 million, and Growth $349/month, each with a yearly option.
What rating does UserWay have on the Shopify App Store?
3.2 out of 5 stars from 11 reviews on October 9, 2026, on a listing first published May 25, 2021. Eleven reviews is a small sample, and many stores install UserWay's script outside the app, so the review count says little about how widely it is used.
Has UserWay faced FTC action?
We are not aware of any FTC action against UserWay. The FTC's 2025 accessibility-overlay order concerned accessiBe, which agreed to pay $1 million to settle charges about its compliance claims.
Does a pageview-priced widget get cheaper as my store grows?
No, the opposite: UserWay's Shopify tiers step up with monthly page views, so a store that grows from 90,000 to 150,000 views a month moves from the $49 to the $149 plan. Code fixes made in your theme cost the same however much traffic you get afterwards.
What is the alternative to the UserWay Shopify app?
Fix the theme instead of layering on top of it. Scan the storefront to get a list of failing elements (RatedWithAI does this for $29/month using axe-core; WAVE and Lighthouse do one page free), have the theme code fixed, then decide whether you still want a visitor toolbar as an extra.
